As human beings who always have a tendency to question every incident and occurrence, what captivates us the most, is a mystery that is yet to be solved. A mystery, which could present itself in any form, gives rise to two strong emotions in us–fear and exhilaration. True, an enigma that is yet to be answered is enthralling, but it is also ten folds unnerving. The world has many such mysteries to offer to us, so that we may investigate and mull over them.
One such uncanny occurrence that intrigues me and many more, even today, is the mysterious dog suicides that take place at the Overtoun Bridge. Starting in the 1950s, more than 50 canines have leapt from the same spot, more than 50 feet below the bridge, leading to instantaneous death. In 2006, as many as five dogs committed suicide at the bridge within a span of six months. What’s even creepier is that the deaths of long-nosed dogs such as collies, retrievers and Labradors, were more common. While some believe that the dogs might have jumped because they were depressed, other think the place is haunted, and many more are of the opinion that the smell of minks causes them to jump off. Mink or ghost, the question that leaves everyone baffled is why the same spot? Then there’s Jack the Ripper, a serial killer, whose identity is unknown even today. His victims were mainly prostitutes, who he slaughtered and mutilated brutally in the White Chapel area of London. He would most often leave letters and clues for the local police, leading to several men being questioned. Despite interrogating these suspects, the cops could not zero in on the culprit. If that doesn’t freak you out, how about the most recent mystery that’s been on everyone’s mind? On March 8, 2014, Malaysian airline, Flight MH370, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members suddenly vanished without a trace. While on their way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, the entire aircraft mysteriously disappeared into thin air. Even today, investigations are on, and search parties are doing their best to find out the victims, but the MH370 is yet to be discovered.
